Apart from the "Y"-shaped rail network for the mainline train service that operates on Sardinia, there is also the wonderful Green Train (Trenino Verde). This tourist serve is operated by the State Railways, but uses a narrow gauge network that passes through a landscape with viaducts, rocky cliffs and spectacular scenery. Commonly referred to as the "train in the wilderness", the Green Train shows tourists an aspect of Sardinia that seems to have changed little over the years. The little train trundles through rocky and often inaccessible terrain that cannot be viewed in any other way. Tickets can be bought beforehand at railway stations or on the train on the day of travel.
Olbia Airport trains that connect with more tourist inspired train services are those that depart from Sassari for the Sassari-Nulvi-Palau Line. This is another narrow gauge train, which rattles at a fairly sedate speed high above deep ravines and clings to hillsides or sneaks across historic viaducts.
The first stop of this service is at Filigheddu, the second stop is at Achettas. After that the train has to climb an increasingly steep path until it reaches Osilo, where the imposing Castle Malaspina, dating back to the 13th century, can be found. Along the way of this picturesque train journey visitors will find many monuments and attractions, but the main attraction is Sardinia itself, the splendid views over gorges, pastures, through lush vegetation and up steep mountain sides.
